Kill Whitey?

[24 Nov 2009|08:27am]
I just had a look at Obama's 2010 budget proposal and I am SO disappointed. At least, from what I can tell, he hasn't increased the DOD budget much. It shows something like a 12 percent increase, but I also notice that Bush's "Global War on Terror" budget heading from last year no longer exists and the new DOD budget contains the parenthetical "(Overseas Contingency Operations)." I did a very cursory computation of the math on this and it adds up that almost all of the DOD budget increase can be accounted for by absorbing that war on terror fund into the DOD fund in a very obvious move to satisfy both liberals (by eliminating the nasty "war on terror" heading) and conservatives (by pseudo-increasing the DOD budget).

I like that obama has healed a lot of the world's negative view toward us and something about his voice makes me feel like things aren't going to hell on a bullet train...but that's about it at this point. I'm sure glad McCain isn't in office, but I wish we had elected an actual liberal with some actual balls. Near as I can tell, his budget is nearly identical to W's except for the fact that he's just increased the funding for everything (save for cutting the budgets for the dept of energy, oddly enough, and the corps of engineers).

Libertarianism [10 Oct 2009|02:32am]
In the complete absence of governmental control over industry, industry becomes the new government.  Sure, the role of the state is lessened, but it gives way to the role of the company.  If given carte blanche, it would take all of five minutes for corporations to enact "pre-employment policies" that prohibit all manner of personal and private practices currently debated within state government (state, in this case, referring to national government).  We've proven time and time again that values and identity are nothing in the face of starvation and poverty.

Even if our current American government only amounts to a glorified illusion of control held by the common voter, it is still highly prefereable to a company-run environment in which the average person can't even pretend to have a say in the running of things.  Sure big money rules the elections, but at least this big money must affect some votes, some choice, some free will.

I am ohhhh so sore, but it's all good.  Come to think if it...it really is.  Everything right now is completely good.  Happiness and self-satisfaction are pretty solid allies.

There is nothing on radar, no compass heading at all.  I am simply afloat in still water and only proceed in whatever direction I choose.  It feels great.

That being said, I have deliberately ignored my phone for the past week.  I apologize to all missed calls and unanswered text messages.  Sometimes it just feels good to be off the grid.

My father told me the other day that my facial hair makes me look like Denis Leary in The Ref.  My mom agreed with him and went so far as to add that I sometimes behave like him, which didn't seem to make her happy.  Ha.  Really, I don't think i look like him specifically.  I think just being Irish, angry, and growing this particular style of facial hair goes a long way toward homogenizing you among every other Irish American...kind of like a uniform.

Nothing against "promiscuous girl" or "whatever you like," but I would rather have been part of the generation that inspired "born on the bayou," or "hey joe."

I used to say i was born ten years too late.  I've since quintupled that number.

Is anybody working someplace that is hiring?  I don't care what it is as long as it's part-time and it's NOT harbor freight tools.

I'll Always Remember [01 Dec 2008|11:26pm]

Watching every episode of Home Improvement, Northern Exposure, and Frasier with my dad.

Making a paper mache(yeah, i can't spell it either) bear for 4th grade science and watching President Clinton's second inaugural address.

Driving with my dad in the Oldsmobile when Chuck Roast (one of the original KFMA Djs) broke the news that Gwen Stefani had started dating Gavin Rossdale.  I turned to my dad and said "Oh good for her, when this No Doubt thing passes, Gavin can support her cause Bush will be around forever."  Give me a little break on this one, I was only 9 or 10 years old.

Speaking of KFMA, I'll bet most of you can't remember how it came to be.  As I recall, it started at 96.1 when they instituted the Test Department program to give some air to this crazy new genre called Alternative Rock.  The program was run by a woman named Susie Dunn and was such a success that they sent her out to found an entire station that would broadcast what was essentially the soundtrack to my childhood.

My first Walkman.  Fuck Ipods, Walkmans were mind-blowing in their day.  They were huge (comparatively speaking) and you had to carry them like they were newborn babies with britlle bone disease to keep them from skipping, but we all thought they were a hell of a lot cooler than the radio.

Green Day t-shirts EVERYWHERE.

Every girl in school having the post-Titanic Leo fever.  Coincidentally, I think that movie is the first time I can recall seeing boobs in a movie...and on Christmas Day no less  Hmm, the first rack I saw belonged to Kate Winslet.  Guess she deserves some kind of honorable mention.

Seeing Weird Al live (my first concert, thanks Patrick)

Buying a Social D album for my father, listening to it, and then keeping it for myself.

"Closing TIme" by Semisonic.  That whole album was good.

The Y2K fanaticism.  We don't talk about it anymore, I think because we're too ashamed to admit that we lost our fucking minds over what turned out to be nothing.

Mom waking me up at 6am on September 11 2001 because she'd heard we'd been attacked but she didn't know how to turn the tv on to see the news...and all the surreality that followed.

I think I'll stop there.  This is definitely a work in progress.

Lately, I'm feeling a need to spend some time in the great nowhereland.  All of this interminable day-to-day bullshit is grating on my nerves.  From the time I leave my house in the morning, all I can think is please, let's just move this shit along so I can get back home.  I think this for awhile even after I get home because, most of the time, my house is just another place where I'm likely to hear "I need you to do this, that, and the other."  Home, in its best sense,  really doesn't start for me until sometime after 10 o clock when my parents are asleep and my phone is unlikely to ring, on weekdays at least.

I really need to bottleneck the input for awhile.  If I had it my way, I'd go spend a few days in a solid-colored room with only a bed, some books, a stereo, and a guitar.  Though i can't imagine a scenario in the context of what mom calls reality where that would be possible and that, as the poet would say, sucks ass.

Can I land on just one rock without having to share it with you?  You've beaten me to each one thus far and, each time, thrown me off into the water.  This time is no different and I don't even think you realize it.
Kill Whitey?

[04 Oct 2008|12:14am]

I've been trying to sleep for two and a half fucking hours.  I have work at 6 in the morning and, afterward, I have to somehow fit in chores, some homework, and a workout before the evening.  Why is it so difficult to create free time to spend with the people you care about?  Create time.  This is a fairly new and frightening concept to me.  It's never something I had to do before.  I know for a fact that days didn't used to be so short.  It seems like, once you turn 20, a giant lead foot falls from the sky and presses down on your accelerator.  They want you to crash and die as quickly as possible to make room for the new bunch.

Seems stupid to say because there is obviously nothing to be done about it, but whatever.  Growing up sucks worse than I was prepared to expect.  Here's to hope for the happy parts they told me would come later.

Kill Whitey?

I need something new, something big, to wrap my head around.  i don't care what.  I'd be satisfied with some gargantuan catastrophe.  I just can't grapple with the same old problems and ideas anymore.  It's boring and it's making my mind atrophy.
